Preparation of N-doped carbon materials from cellulose:chitosan blends and their potential application in electrocatalytic oxygen reduction

Abstract Carbon-based electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are prepared by a direct pathway including two-step thermal treatment process applied to porous spheres of natural biopolymer blends. Cellulose blends with chitosan first thermally treated at moderate temperatures (e.g., 200 °C), then pyrolyzed elevated temperature (800–1000 both steps under constant nitrogen flow. By blending cellulose chitosan, the content in final carbon-based catalyst can be considerably increased. The influence composition precursor blend on ORR electrocatalytic activity is analyzed correlation elemental and other structural features catalyst. polymer containing cellulose:chitosan = 75:25, 1 h °C 800 atmosphere, shows highest activity. This attributed an increased surface area combined relatively high higher pyridinic/pyrrolic species ratio.
